NEMA 12

Indoor enclosure rating — protects against falling dirt, dripping non-corrosive liquids, dust, and lint. The default for most plant-floor control panels not exposed to washdown.

NEMA 4 / 4X

For washdown areas (food, beverage, pharma, dairy) where the panel must withstand high-pressure hose-down and chemical sanitation. NEMA 4X adds stainless or coated construction.

UL 484

Safety listing for room air conditioners and enclosure-mounted ACs. Required by most municipal electrical inspectors and increasingly by plant maintenance specifications.

UL 508A

Industrial control panel safety standard. The cooling unit itself doesn't need 508A, but it must be compatible with — and not compromise — the panel's 508A short-circuit rating.

Why indoor industrial panel cooling is a difficult cooling problem

The five operational challenges every spec needs to plan for — before you pick a unit.

VFD heat density

A 100hp VFD dissipates 2,500–3,500W as heat in a small enclosure. Concentrated heat sources demand higher-capacity units than a simple watts-per-square-foot estimate suggests.

Plant ambient varies wildly

A control panel in a steel mill may see 110°F ambient. A panel in a cold-storage facility may see 50°F. The same equipment requires very different cooling specs depending on plant climate.

Conductive dust

Metal-working, mining, food-processing dust is conductive when wet and corrosive. NEMA 12 ratings prevent dust ingress that would short circuit boards or accelerate contactor wear.

Washdown survival

Food, beverage, pharma, and dairy plants hose-down the production floor with chemical sanitizers daily. A NEMA 12 unit fails in days. NEMA 4X with coated coils is mandatory.

Vibration

Panels mounted on or near rotating equipment (motors, pumps, presses) experience continuous vibration that loosens fasteners, fatigues refrigerant lines, and shortens compressor life. Panel mounts and refrigerant routing must account for this.

Which Indoor Industrial Cooling Setup Do You Need?

Indoor cooling decisions hinge on two questions: (1) Will the panel be washed down? (2) Is the plant ambient roughly office-comfortable, or does it run hot? The answers point you to a NEMA 12 or NEMA 4X air conditioner — heat exchangers are not appropriate for most indoor applications because the ambient is rarely cool enough below the cabinet target.

Condition 1

Indoor, NEMA 12, no washdown, ambient < 95°F

Recommendation

AN-series UL Type 4 AC

Most common case. AN-series indoor air conditioners are designed for typical plant-floor ambient and are UL Type 4 listed, exceeding NEMA 12 requirements for protection against non-corrosive dust and dripping liquids.

Washdown environment (food, beverage, pharma)

Recommendation

AT-series NEMA 4X AC

AT-series outdoor NEMA 4X units survive washdown — coated coils, sealed seams, and corrosion-resistant fasteners. Specify the 4X variant for chemical-sanitation environments.

Condition 3

Plant ambient > 100°F (steel, glass, foundry)

Recommendation

AT-series NEMA 4X AC

Higher ambient ratings (158°F max operating) and more aggressive coil coating make AT-series the right choice even when the panel is technically indoors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about indoor industrial panel cooling.

Why not use a heat exchanger for an indoor industrial panel?
Heat exchangers only work when ambient is meaningfully cooler than your equipment target — typically by ~18°F or more. Most indoor industrial environments run too warm relative to typical 104°F equipment targets, so the heat exchanger has no temperature differential to drive heat transfer. The exception: SCADA rooms, server closets, and control rooms with their own HVAC where ambient is reliably 70–75°F. There a HIX or HTC heat exchanger can work and saves substantial operating cost.
What's the difference between NEMA 12 and NEMA 4 for indoor use?
NEMA 12 is the indoor-only rating: protects against falling dirt, dust, lint, dripping non-corrosive liquids. NEMA 4 adds protection against directed water (hose-down), splashing, and dust-tight sealing for outdoor or washdown use. NEMA 4X adds corrosion resistance via stainless or coated construction. Use NEMA 12 for typical plant-floor panels with no washdown. Use NEMA 4 (or 4X) for any panel exposed to direct water spray, chemical sanitation, or coastal/industrial corrosive air.
How do I size cooling for a VFD enclosure?
Start with the drive's published heat dissipation (typically 2–3% of rated kW). A 50hp drive at 37 kW rated dissipates roughly 1,100W of heat at full load. Add the heat from any soft starter, line reactor, control transformer, and PLC in the same enclosure. Multiply by a duty-cycle factor (1.0 if continuous, 0.6–0.8 for typical machine-tool cycles). Compare to your enclosure's max interior temperature (usually 104°F) versus your plant's max ambient. For a typical 30–50hp VFD panel in a 90°F plant, an AN06 6,000 BTU is the common starting point. Can a control panel AC handle daily washdown?
Only if it's NEMA 4X rated. Standard NEMA 12 units have seals and louvers designed to keep dust out, not to withstand directed water spray or chemical sanitizers. A NEMA 12 unit subjected to washdown will fail within weeks. For food, beverage, dairy, or pharma plants with daily wash-down protocols, specify AT-series NEMA 4X with epoxy-coated coils and stainless or coated sheet metal.
What about UL 508A short-circuit current rating (SCCR)?
UL 508A is the panel-level standard, not a cooling-unit certification. The AC unit itself must be UL 484 listed (which all VoltAire ACs are), and the panel's overall SCCR is determined by the lowest-rated component in the power path. The AC's branch circuit protection (typically a circuit breaker or fused disconnect) must be coordinated with the panel's main feed to maintain the panel's overall SCCR. Your panel builder or 508A shop can advise on appropriate breaker selection.
