Total Cost of Ownership is the sum of four cost components over your selected time horizon.

Capital Cost

Purchase price + installation labor. Replacement costs added when equipment reaches end-of-service-life within the time horizon.

Electricity Cost

Average running watts × annual operating hours × your electricity rate. Heat exchangers consume far less than air conditioners (fans only, no compressor).

Maintenance Cost

Typical annual service expenses (filter changes, refrigerant checks, capacitor replacements, etc.). VoltAire heat exchangers have very low maintenance requirements due to no refrigerant or compressor.

Downtime Risk

Probability-weighted cost of equipment failure. Each option has a reliability multiplier based on historical MTBF data. Heat exchangers have the highest reliability (no compressor to fail).

Where do the cost numbers come from?
VoltAire air-conditioner pricing is published list price drawn live from our catalog. VoltAire heat exchangers are quote-only, so their capital costs in this tool are illustrative estimates (marked with an asterisk) until you request current pricing. Competitor pricing for OEM enclosure ACs is NOT publicly listed (most competitors are quote-only through distributors), so the calculator uses customer-reported typical purchase prices for equivalent OEM units in the U.S. market — these are estimates, and actual quoted pricing varies by distributor, region, and quantity. Electricity consumption is based on nameplate ratings adjusted for typical duty cycles. Maintenance estimates and reliability factors are derived from industry-typical service data, not statistically validated benchmarks. Why do heat exchangers have lower TCO than air conditioners?
Three reasons: (1) lower purchase price, (2) dramatically lower electricity consumption — fans only, no compressor (typically 5-10x less power), and (3) longer service life with no compressor to wear out. The tradeoff is that heat exchangers can only cool to a few degrees above ambient, so they require ambient temperature lower than your target internal temperature to work.
What downtime cost should I use?
Downtime cost varies enormously by application. Use these typical ranges: small PLC cabinet ($500-2,000/hour), industrial process line ($5,000-25,000/hour), telecom site ($1,000-10,000/hour depending on subscribers affected), data center ($10,000-100,000/hour). If unsure, use $2,000/hour as a conservative default — it's a common figure for industrial enclosure failures.
How accurate is the "Do Nothing" option?
The "Do Nothing" baseline assumes no cooling investment but accounts for elevated equipment failure risk from running components above their rated temperatures.
